Picture capture fail

Hey guys, since you’re unhappy with the flying software (and since some claim to be developers) you can turn into open source free software and plan your flights yourselves. Even since many of you are flying high end machines like the inspire 2 with custom lenses, it’s unthinkable to rely on a piece of software that has proven pretty unstable lately! This product is offering some standard solutions while you’re asking for custom things that are not part of the current project…

 

By the way the pix4D capture app is a free app and I believe that it has nothing to do with the subscription solutions pix4D is offering for other services!

Hello Dim, switching to another capture package is fine.  However, the underlying concern is with the entire eco-system.  The capture software is Pix4D’s entry point in getting people to use their entire package.  You would expect it to work flawlessly, yet it doesn’t, and the excuses for failures are ridiculous.  The marketing guys should be all over this.  It begs the question:  If the entry point has issues, what other issues will be uncovered when I purchase the entire package.  Some of us already got burned with the Mac OSX software.  Will a similar position be taken with other aspects of the product?

I’d be interested to hear what “custom” things we’re asking for.   Pix4D claims to support the drones, cameras and lenses that are being used, yet failures seem frequent.  I’m not trying to fly and control our Red Epic-W.

In any case, we’ve moved to other control software and we’ll likely continue to use Pix4DMapper for the reconstruction until something better comes along (and you gotta know that companies like DJI are doing exactly that).  We tried using Pix4D when the Mac version was promised and then moved to something else when Pix4D abandoned that platform.  I thought we’d try it again since we purpose-built a couple of high-end PCs to work with their stuff.  We’ll give it a couple more months and then decide.  My original post was triggered because I lost half a day setting things up only to have the capture software silently fail.  Anyway, best of luck!

Robert, I agree in almost everything you quote, except for the part you refer to things you’re asking from the software. I mean, that given that you’re running a commercial operation, you’re expecting the software to perform flawlessly. It is something that pix4D has achieved with the early versions, as myself have found in numerous projects. I really cannot understand how is it possible to have a code that is working perfectly and then “upgrade” it to what it is today. Though I must boldly say that I haven’t used pix4d capture ever again, after the first anomaly occurred and I think that this is the message that should go through; pix4D is losing skilled people from the platform because of these problems that keep going on and on.

I had the same issue last year, but was able to get the app working again with my DJI P3P and iPhone 7 earlier this year after doing an app update. I will say the desktop application works really well. Capture app developers must have a hard time keeping up with all of the firmware and hardware updates for the many many UAVs that are used with the app. Pix4D may need to consider limiting the number of UAVs that are compliant with the app so they can focus on those issues more efficiently. Of course, that would upset many users, but many users already feel that way. Perhaps stick with Phantom 4 and Matrice 100 for example and not spread themselves too thin. I’m not a developer so I can’t speak from that kind of experience. I can say that their are new apps coming out each year that are just as capable as Capture in flying missions at a lower costs. If I didn’t have an education license and the lower cost, I would have to use something else.

Has there been any progress on this issue? I just lost two missions running 4.6 on iPad mini with a Mavic Pro. I ended up with only the last 1/2 of the photos from the second run.
Im running the latest firmware, DJI was running in the background, but I watched the video feed blink with each shot and everything reported ok - until I got home with mostly empty SD card.

It would be nice at least if the app could check that the files are being written to the card as we fly or even after the mission.

You should be able to get the uniform image acquisition. As a first step, I would suggest you go through all the basic checks and troubleshooting steps as it will solve most of the issues that can be encountered if properly followed.

In your case, you should not open the drone manufacturer’s app(DJI Go) while running the Pix4Dcapture app. This will cause the conflict in connection with the drone. Force quit the DJI app before opening the Pix4Dcapture app: (Android, iOS) How to force quit an app.

Before explaining the problem, here are the equipments and firmware/OS versions :

- Drone Phantom 4 Pro V01.05.0600

- App Pix4d capture: 4.10.0(11)

- Ipad mini 4 V13.4.1

Here is the problem, picture are taken at irregular frequencies, see image below :

The flight parameters were the following :

  • altitude 400’ AGL
  • Flight speed : average 7m/s
  • Front overlap : 80%
  • Side overlap : 70%
  • Angle camera 90°
  • Fast mode
  • White balance : Auto

After years of using pix4D capture it’s the first time the team has experienced such a problem.

Do you have any clue where this problem comes from?

I have seen similar behavior before with one of our missions. Did you happen to try uploading the mission again and executing it? That’s what solved it for me. I am also flying a P4P.

Reseting the drone won’t help. I have the exact same issue as you guys and it SUCKS!! pics appear not to be taken in constant interval. Im uploading hear a photo from my computer after geting the SD into it. It really just started recently, Pix4D always worked well for us. Do you have any ideas how to solve the problem?
