Beta macOS version of Pix4Dmapper 3.0

I agree with Jonathan and Damien and I propose a petition to be send to Pix4D asking to not stop OSX version dvelopment and releasing a version same as the last for Windows 10 users. I am the first, due to my iMac Pro (late 2017) is “on the way” and a such a machine is worth considering by Pix4D IMHO. This exhortation is addressed to all OSX and Apple users

I have to agree with others in the thread. My company paid out for the permanent liscense of Pix4D BIM and subsequently sent two employees to training in Seattle last year. That is no small amount of money. This decision was based on information about a Mac OS release from this very thread, which came directly from Pix4D moderators. Based on our interactions during our visit to Seattle I understand that Pix4D doesn’t quite get why people are choosing Mac OS over Windows for this application in the first place. I won’t speak for everybody in this thread but let me explain our circumstances… our company uses drones for mapping and data gathering but we also use drones for photography and cinematography (we’re full service). Here in the midwestern U.S. if you’re working with pictures and videos, you’re working on a Mac, plain and simple. I understand that a computer programmer (like those developing Pix4D) is going to choose windows every time, but you’re dealing with two very different mediums and workflows.

Further more, we are processing our media on a Mac Pro that costs nearly as much as the Pix4D permanent liscense does. Trading that in for a windows PC doesn’t make sense. The same problem can be said for the boot camp “fix”. It doesn’t make sense from a workflow perspective to reboot the machine every time the user needs to switch tasks. Furthermore, boot camp makes my (very expensive) Mac susceptible to the same viruses and malware that are so common on PCs.

Don’t get me wrong, currently Pix4D is the absolute best mapping software in the industry, I don’t want to go without it, but paying money based on your word that a stable Mac release was coming and then abandoning development of that software doesn’t sit well with me either.

I agree with Jonathan, Damien and Zachary: all together we can send a petition to Pix4D asking to develop an OSX version stable and upgraded.

I’m interested too, for sure.

Hi all,

I had an exchange with a Sales representative on Friday and she clarified Pix4D is not stopping the MacOS version. The team is simply working on others priorities at this time. I have not got information about when this will be back to work, thought.

Kind regards,

This post refers to OS X Pix4Dmapper 2.0. Since the release of OS X Pix4Dmapper 2.1, we have created a new post here, on which you can post your comments and your feedback.
This post will be closed to comments.

We hope version 2.1 will better meet your needs.

Hello Pix4D members & Apple fans!

We are happy to announce the first beta OS X version of Pix4Dmapper!
Please note that this is a beta version and is not (yet) intended for production or professional usage. Your feedback is very welcome to help us improve the OS X version and have an official release soon.

Hi all. Like you I’m awaiting for the macOS version since months of announcement. I’ve used Pix4D 3.0.18 Mac beta without problem with all of my sets (Model and Mapper in my case). The only way I’m using Bootcamp is for sending to Pix4DCloud…

Everything appears functional (despite the beta status) and the UI is the same, then the code must be common.

In this case, why Pix4D can’t build a macOS & Windows version at the same time ?

If you have no ressources for complying a GM for macOS, you can let it beta but mac users will take advantages of improvements

@Jérom

On my Apple Mac Pro I use both versions, but It is a waste of time switch between them every time, quiting each system: the main reason is that the two versions are not the same and have not the same features. The Windows 10 one has more and more features than the OSX version. Last but not least I’m not expert with Windows 10 and there are lot of risks in “Windows 10 world”: viruses, malfunctions, freezings and so on.

Like many other we were looking at dronedeploy vs Pix4d. As a package I think we may have gone to Pix4d but the lack of a stable iMac version means we will be going to Dronedeploy. In all honesty i cannot understand Pix4d’s decision to not have a Mac version? They must be losing so many customers because of this decision,

@Paul Cusick: I agree with you (I own an iMac Pro (late 2017) but I need to use a Mac Pro (late 2013) and Bootcamp in Win10 Pro mode due to they upgrade only the Windos version since november 2015!) but I also think that if we all togheter ask a new OSX version is better than leave Pix4D. Two are the possible causes for this issue: they don’t have persons able and competent with OSX or they earn much from the Win users. Agisof give a trial perido of 30 days: they don’t. Agisoft has an OSX version: they don’t. Wake up or you will loose clients IMHO.

Yes, I would very much like to stay with Pix4D, it is extremely disappointing regarding the development hiatus / cancellation.

I am in a real bind now, I have some projects stacked up and I really need to decide where to commit my investment. My entire workflow is Mac based and Pix4D was a perfect solution.

Pix4d should make it obvious. They should say “PIX4d does not work on iMacs”… I spent hours installing on an iMac 5k 2017 using parallels. (Similar to bootcamp). So booted in Windows 10pro and started and upload a project. It runs but gives error messages saying OPENGL not supported. OpenGL lives primarily in the PC world. As an aside Autocad runs on iMac / dual booted with Windows 10.

I don’t often post on forums. I suspect most people don’t. However I do think Pix4D should do the right thing and tell people not to bother if they have an iMac as it is just wasting everyone’s time. Perhaps run a quick survey on their home page?

Do you use iMac or PC?

The results would be interesting. I may actually do it myself https://www.dronesdirectory.co.uk

If I remember correctly (This was over a year ago), I was once told by a Pix4D staff member that the hang up for developing the Mac platform was due to apples choice of video card Radeon vs GeForce. I’ve heard rumors that Mac is considering switching to NVIDIA based systems when they release their new Mac Pro and can’t help but wonder if those rumors are the reason that the Mac based Pix4D development has been placed on hold.

My company shares the same problem as Rob, our entire workflow is Mac based, right down to the iPads we use to fly our drones. We have the Pix4D perpetual license which we purchased with the understanding that a stable Mac release was in the pipeline. We’re currently searching for other options including similar software and purchasing a PC powerful enough to meet our needs (7-10 thousand dollar range), so regardless of which path we take, our company will be out a large amount of money either way.

We’ve tried using boot camp but switching back and fourth between systems is extremely inconvenient and the most current windows version takes about twice the amount of processing time versus the most current Mac beta. Unfortunately purchasing the perpetual liscense leaves us little in the way choice. So far it has turned out to be a bad investment decision on our part. What’s most disappointing is that Pix4D is currently the only company that produces software that exactly meets our needs in the way of capabilities.

It would make sense to at least offer an NVIDIA option, CUDA is used so widely and offers so much of a performance boost…

I understand that Video editing is a core industry for Apple and its own apps are optimised for OpenCL but why not offer the option. NVIDIA offer current driver support and CUDA for their latest cards on the Mac. I’m using a Hackintosh currently to take advantage of CUDA for rendering etc. I’m looking at Photoscan (on my Mac) and the performance difference with GPU acceleration is astounding.

It doesn’t give me what Pix4D gives in terms of features (and until I’ve got my head around it, quality) but I’d really really prefer to use Pix4D. The boot camp option is a non starter for me. so…?

@Paul Cusick I was very happy when on November 2015 Pix4D announced the first edition of OSX version and then, after a workshop held on March 2016 at Lausanne, in June 2016 I bought a perpetual license of Pix4D and in June 2017 I subscribed an upgrade subscription paying the relative cost, hoping that the next OSX version would be disposable as soon as possible. In the meantime, due to I own an Apple Mac Pro (late 2013), I made a partition of my SSD (1TB) and thanks to Bootcamp I installed on it Winwos 10 Pro and the Pix4Dmapper Pro relative version: so. when I work only for me I use OSX 3.0.18 version, when I work for others or I need to show my works on a a PC or on a portable computer (Windows based) I use the Win 10 pro 4.1.25 version. It’s a waste of time siwtch off the license on portable computer to switch on my second license on the same Mac Pro on which the Win 10 Pro version runs: the two versio can’t run both together also if the computer is the same. Now I’ve bought a new and wonderful iMac Pro (late 2017) an I’ve decided to leave only the OSX version on it.

@**rob dennis **If you need help to process your datasets, simply ask and I’ll help you processing them on my Mac Pro (late 2013-Win 10 version) or on my iMac Pro (late 2017-OSX version) and giving the output folder to you via WeTransfer: I’ve done this type of work for others and it helps. Of course there is a cost to pay.

Thanks Antonio, I may very well be In touch.

Thanks

Rob

Very interesting that the brand new beta for Pix4D fields is MacOS only! not sure whether this is good or bad thing.

Windows version coming the future.

@rob dennis Where and when did you read a such a new? Do you refer to Pix4DCapture not to Pix4Dmapper Pro, isn’t it?

HI Antonio, I received an email yesterday and an opportunity to join the beta. It’s a brand new product
