[Pix4Dcapture iOS 2.1.0] Feedback and experience

Can anyone confirm that the latest version of Pix4D Capture is compatible with the latest firmware release from DJI for the Inspire 1 v2.0 (v01.11.01.50)? The release notes on the firmware states that DJI is throttling altitude to 30 m and distance to 50 m “when not connected or logged into the app during flight, including DJI GO and all apps compatible with DJI aircraft.”

I am not going to be a guinea pig for DJI and hope they got it right…

@Grady Shut DJI GO down completely before starting Capture. It should not be running, even in the background. I had the same problem and that worked for me.

I have not been able to fly a successful mission with Pix4D Capture 2.1.0 (6) and DJI Firmware V0200.0106 for my phantom 4. Before updating the firmware to the most recent, I was experiencing the same problem as Grady, where the checklist would get hung on ‘uploading mission to drone’ and never go. After updating to the Firmware above, the Capture app now just crashes within seconds of going into grid-view set up. Usually right when I attempt to manipulate one of the grid endpoints.

Hi Colin,

Could you confirm:

  • The latest version of Pix4Dcapture is installed.
  • The latest DJI GO (4) version is installed.

Also:

  • Did you try to log in the DJI app and connect to the drone before opening Pix4Dcapture?
  • Did you make sure DJI GO is not running once you opened Pix4Dcapture?
  • Did you try to start over from scratch, turn off the drone and controller, close all apps?

Hi,

I am flying Double Grid missions with a DJI Inspire 2 and X5S. Even with 70-Degree Camera Angle, 50m Altitude, 75% Sidelap and 85% Overlap, my 3D Models are missing a lot of detail on the sides of the buildings. Would it help to change the Advanced Settings and click “Yes” for “Look At Grids Centre” so that it captures more accurately angled photos?

Hi Julie - I was using the older version of DJI Go. Updating to the latest solved the issue. Thanks

@Colin - Thank you for letting us know! We are happy to see it worked :).

@Owen - Depending on the material of the facade (e.g. it can be reflective, too dark or too light, etc.), the reconstruction becomes difficult for the software as it cannot find good characteristic/ key features to match between images. The Look at grid’s center option can help. It is a simple grid with all images orientated towards the center that could, for instance, be a building. The double grid takes pictures from 4 different sides, while this option allows to increase the overlap between images having different orientation (smoother transition around the building).

You could try the option and fly closer to the building.

HELLO

I am a question, for Pix 4d capture for IOS, it is necessary to instal Ctrol + DJI.

Thanks

No, that app doesn’t exist and is not necessary on iOS.

Just update Pix4Dcapture and IOS sofwtare (11.2.6) in iPad air 2.

The Pix4Dcapture starts but it stays in the background. I tried to call the app up but keeps going to background before I can even see main menu.

Help please

Dear Support,

First, I’d like to thank you for the wonderful workshop I attended in Lausanne this march.

This feedback is for version 3.0.0 (61):

  1. thank you so much for adding the ability to return to mission after battery depletion, haven’t had the chance to try it yet, but looking forward to…

  2. I noticed that in a few recent flights, in the very last line, the drone suddenly accelerates and takes fewer photos along that line.

  3. When I designed a certain project, the flight time showed 11m2s, then when I connected to drone it changed to 14m57s. a relatively big difference.

  4. I’d like to have the ability to design polygon missions for 3d surveys as well.

  5. I’d also like to have the ability to input the vertices’ coordinates (preferably in geographic WGS 84).

Thank you,

Isaak.

Can the developers add the ability to input coordinates into the app in order to (a) set two points on a leg of the flight plan, or (b) display points in the GUI so we can move the flight path to avoid an obstacle?

The problem I am experiencing is that we are flying a new NCAA track and field complex with 110 foot field light poles. In order to obtain the accuracy I need we need a GSD less than 0.5 which calls for flights with my Inspire 1 at an altitude of 90 ft AGL. Without having any idea of where the poles are located within the app that is not possible. The alternative is to fly the missions (4 required for a coverage of the entire project) at 130-150 ft AGL which gives me a GSD of .63 at best.

I fly new construction sites for a living. I would like to see a feature that at a minimum allows you to input obstacle locations within the app that will allow you to properly plan a mission and factor in obstacle avoidance. I know that the software calculates overlap and shutter triggering automatically and allowing the pilot to override that functionality is not the best solution. That being said, the ability to enter points into the software would be a huge help to those of us who work around obstacles on a daily basis.

Thank you,

Randal Martin

Randal,

That sounds like a very difficult thing for the app and a limited use-case so I wouldn’t expect it any time soon.  My thoughts are to use a better camera and zoom lens to fly higher and get sub 0.5" GSD.  My M600 with Sony a7Rii can get 0.35" GSD at 140’ AGL nadir.  And I would consider that the max GSD if the accuracy is really meant to be 0.5" as that is a more usable specification than GSD to the end user.  If the accuracy is 1.0" then I could easily fly at 200’ AGL without any worry of obstructions so the right hardware can often be the key to the mission and not the flight app.

Adam,

I’m aware that it would be advantageous to upgrade my UAS. I have submitted three proposals to the board to do that. State government works in glacial timeframes when it comes to releasing funding to programs not on their agenda. My program is one of them. I could ignore GSD with my current setup because that number is a preference, not a demand as well but everything I do falls within controlled airspace and my service cap is 150 ft AGL across the board until LAANC goes into effect sometime by the end of the year. So at this point I am stuck trying to negotiate obstacles that do not appear on any map within the flight planning software or flying at my service cap. Again, it was a request on my part that was echoed in the post above mine to an extent. But thanks for your input.

@Isaac, thank you for the positive feedback about the workshop and multi-battery feature.

There is a known issue where the drone accelerates to 10 m/s in the last line of the mission. Our developers are already working on it and the issue should be resolved in the next release. More here

Could you give us more information about the issue when the time estimation does not correspond to the final value? Is this something that happens on every mission? Could you try to manually move/shift the grid just before starting the mission to update it and tell us if the issue persists?

As for the suggestions from @Isaac and Randal. We have a dedicated community page for suggestions and would invite you, for next time, to post them here

At the moment I forwarded all of them to the team in charge to review them. There are already more users requesting both, polygon double-grid missions and the possibility to import coordinates, and your vote will add some weight to the request.

Best,

Dear Community & Pix4D Support,

I have been trying for weeks to get Pix4D Capture to work in Fast Mode with My Inspire 2 running in a Ipad Pro.

Here is the configuration:

DRONE   INSPIRE 2

CAM       X5S

APP        IOS on IPAD Pro

The app will work in safe mode, but not in fast mode, which is completely unacceptable for productivity - we shoot very large areas, 10 km sq +)

The app shows the camera firing, with dots appearing on the grid, but the card comes back empty.

Also the camera view option one sees in the android versions of the App is not available in IOS - really hard to believe that such an integral feature such as this is not available for the IOS version.

I have followed all of the suggestions in your forums and archives…updated all apps, firmware on the ipad & drone, force quitting Go4 before starting mission, always using freshly-formatted card (formatted in Go4), restarting ipad and drone after cam settings applied in Go4, unplugging and re-plugging cables, etc.  None of this works, the drone will not take pictures in fast mode, even if the speed is set to less than half of the range offered.

I have set the min shutter interval at 2 seconds for the X5S - DJI doesn’t list this officially but I’ve read that this is correct for this camera.

Can someone at Pix4D please provide an HONEST answer:

  1. is mapping with the I2 / X5S / IOS using fast mode possible?  If so, can you provide a checklist for workflow with this configuration?

  2. is there a version of Pix4D Capture for IOS that has the camera view? If so, which version, and how to activate it?

If anyone else out there has experienced the same it would be great to hear from you.

Many thanks!
