Hi everyone,
I’m facing an issue where tree canopies in my Pix4D orthomosaics have unnaturally sharp, artificial boundaries, almost as if parts of the canopy have been “cut and pasted” instead of blending naturally.
I’ve attached several examples comparing the same trees from 2024 and 2026. The yellow outline marks the canopy extent. The problem is consistent across multiple sites and many trees, not just isolated cases.
Project details:
- UAV RGB imagery: DJI Mavic 2 Pro
- High overlap (Front: 80%, Side: 80%)
- Images are sharp (no motion blur)
- Bundle adjustment completed successfully
- Dense point cloud and DSM look reasonable
- The artifact is mainly visible in the orthomosaic
My questions are:
- Is this related to the seamline/blending algorithm?
- Could it be caused by DSM errors around vegetation or true orthomosaic generation?
- Are there any processing settings (mosaic method, blending, DSM resolution, etc.) that can produce more natural canopy edges?
- Has anyone encountered similar artifacts in forestry or dense vegetation projects?
I’d appreciate any suggestions on what could be causing this and how to improve the orthomosaic quality.
Thanks in advance!
