Today, our featured project takes us to Ukraine, concretely to the Vozdvizhenka district, in the city of Kyiv:

This is the story of this project:

This is a 3D model of the Vozdvizhenka district in Kyiv, Ukraine -. Its history begins in the XII century when it was craftsman and traders neighborhood. It was demolished and rebuilt in early 2000’s and now it is an elite residential district with office centers.

The original architectural style of the district has been maintained. Most of the area is already built-up, but there are still some plots awaiting development. As all new buildings have to follow the district style guidelines, this 3D model was created to provide architects with an interactive stylistic reference, to base their facade designs on, to make sure are aligned with the rest of the district.

On this project, we worked together with our partners MagellanGis, who specialize in providing high-quality surveys for architects.

The flexibility of both the image calibration process and the mesh generation settings make Pix4Dmapper software the perfect tool for the job. It calibrates cameras from different image acquisition plans, which is especially helpful when using oblique images. The software also has flexible settings that allow you to generate a mesh optimized to your needs.

As the quality of the mesh highly depends on the image capture process, when creating the flight plan with Pix4D capture we choose a double grid mission. We defined the overlap taking into consideration the height of the buildings. To have enough visual information to reconstruct the facades, we also flew free fright missions along the streets.” Tetiana Kondratenko, DroneUA Project Manager.

  • Image capture strategy: double grid mission, camera angle adjusted 65 degrees + free flight along facades
  • Number of images: 3316
  • Software and processing platform: Pix4Dmapper, using a desktop device Operating System: Windows 10 Pro, 6-bit
  • Hardware: CPU: Intel(R) Core™ i7-6700K CPU, RAM: 32GB, GPU: Intel(R) HD Graphics 530
  • Project editing: we added MTPs in low information areas (High Exposure/Shadow Area), then we edited Point Cloud, deleting artifacts and noise prior to generating the textured mesh.
