Water Drainage identification.

Looking to see how I might use pix4d fields to identify where water drainage issues are occurring in crop fields? using M3M Thanks

Identifying water drainage issues and waterlogged areas requires combining the multispectral imaging capabilities of the DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral (M3M) with the elevation modeling and vegetation index tools in PIX4Dfields.

Step 1: Capture Elevation Data using the M3M

Drainage problems are fundamentally linked to field topography.

  • Flight Mode: Fly a grid mission with RTK enabled (via RTK module/NTRIP) to ensure precise vertical positioning.
  • PIX4Dfields Processing: Select Accurate Processing mode instead of Fast Processing when generating your Digital Surface Model (DSM). This produces a detailed height map that reveals micro-topography, depression zones, and low spots where water naturally pools.
  • Elevation Analysis: Use the DSM layer with custom elevation ranges or color ramps to highlight low elevation basins.

Step 2: Detect Water Stress and Bare Soil Moisture

The M3M sensor carries Green, Red, Red Edge, and Near-Infrared (NIR) bands alongside an RGB camera.

When surveying bare soil or early-stage crops:

  • False Color / Agriculture Composites: Use false color composite views (NIR-Red-Green). Water bodies, saturated mud, and standing water reflect NIR very poorly, making wet soil patches appear dark or distinctly distinct from dry, bare soil.
  • Custom Index / Masking: Create a custom index using NIR and Green/Red bands in PIX4Dfields’ Index Calculator to isolate wet soil patches.

When surveying established crops:

  • NDRE (Normalized Difference Red Edge): Waterlogging suffocates root systems, preventing nitrogen uptake and causing chlorosis. NDRE is more sensitive than standard NDVI to late-stage canopy stress and will highlight drowning, yellowing plants in saturated zones.
  • NDVI / GNDVI: Identifies stunted growth or missing vegetation caused by prolonged standing water.

Step 3: Delineate and Map Drainage Patterns

Once you have generated your DSM and Multispectral layers:

  • Magic Tool: Use the AI-assisted Magic Tool on either your orthomosaic or index map to automatically detect and draw boundaries around stressed crop patches or waterlogged soil zones.
  • Zonation Tool: Convert your index map into discrete management zones to quantify the exact acreage impacted by drainage issues.
  • Layer Comparison (Split View): Compare the DSM (elevation model) side-by-side with your NDRE/NDVI (crop health) layer. If low vigor correlates directly with low elevation contours, poor drainage is almost certainly the root cause.
