Pix4D Fields RX Maps into Raven Viper 4+ screens.

Hi Guys, I do a lot of Prescription maps for weed detection and was wanting to get some advice if possible. I am trying to install RX Maps into Raven Viper 4 + screens and keep getting hit with the map has to many vertices. I have checked my map on QGIS for vertices count and I’m around 65K. I have been told by Raven that RX Maps can go up to 1 million Vertices with no problems. So am thinking i am doing something incorrect on my install.

Hi Ian,

Raven should provide more information on what file type it accepts. Can you ask for an example prescription? You could try splitting the field into two boundaries

Jose,

Thanks for coming back to me. The particular field I mentioned was 6 Ha if i had to split that it wouldn’t be worth me continuing. We all know John deer can handle these RX Maps, I know as ive done 1000HA paddocks with 4% weeds buffered to 8. But these other consoles seem to be the problems. I have contacted Raven and they gave me the parameters for Shapefiles.

Prescription (Rx) Map Requirements for Raven Field Computers

Contains the specific requirements necessary for creating Rx maps for use with a Raven field computer along with some guidelines for best operation.

  • Knowledge

Details

Variable rate prescription, or Rx, maps must adhere to the following for use with Raven field computers:

  • Must be in the WGS84 Datum format.

  • Must contain the .shx, .shp, and .dbf file types.

    • All must be named the same (e.g. VRA.shx, VRA.shp, VRA.dbf).

    • It is recommended to keep names under 25 characters. Names over 25 characters may work in some cases, but issues may occur when importing into a field computer due to limitations in job name length (e.g. 25 characters for Envizio Pro vs. 50 characters for Viper 4).

    • Do not use special characters (#, &, %, etc.). If spaces are needed, it is recommended to use an underscore ( _ ).

    • These files must not be in a zipped folder when importing into a field computer.*

  • Must be constructed as a polygon.

  • Must comply with ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) shapefile standards.

  • Must be created with a GIS software program.

  • Be located in the correct folder (see folder structures below).

* Zipping the .shx, .shp, and .dbf files is only a requirement when transferring Rx maps via the Slingshot website.

For best results:

  • Use as few rate zones as possible when creating the map.

  • Make sure the smallest zones within the Rx map are no smaller than the width of the boom/implement.

There is no folder requirement for Rx maps when importing into the Viper 4. As long as the .shp, .shx, and .dbf files have the same name, they can be found by searching for Rx Maps in the USB Import Manager.

This was what I am following. They also stated a RX map i sent them was well below the 1million Vertices that the screen would allow.

Can you tell me which screen you have tested your product on and if so, was there a particular file format for importing the maps.

I appreciate your help just need to get these maps loading as not every farmer can afford John Deere.

Best

Ian

Hi, we don’t officially support Raven Viper 4. Have you followed exactly what was mentioned? It seems we comply with their points.

feel free to share the shapefile on a zip.

Jose,

Apologies for not getting back to you I got a little busy, Yes it seems we are following the official documentation from Raven, But that doesn’t help in getting farmers spraying. What would work well would be a setting on Pix4D fields that you can press so it exports into Raven.

Thistle 2 Rx_Rx.dbf (600 Bytes)

Thistle 2 Rx_Rx.shx (116 Bytes)

Thistle 2 Rx_Rx.shp (2.0 MB)

HI Ian,

Could you try increasing the cell size? it seems you are using 0.5 meters? why don’t you try with two prescriptions.

Create one with 1 meter and other with 2 meter cell size.

I would also remove the no application 0 zone.

Jose,

As I don’t have that in my Pix4D anymore is there a way to import that back in and modify?

You could import the shapefile as an annotation. Is this prescription still to be applied? You can try with another one or create a new prescription to run the tests.

Hey Jose,

Yes it has been sprayed, Blanket unfortunately. Happy to continue playing with the same area, Can you explain the annotation feature please.

Go to Annotations on the right-hand side panel.

And import the previous Rx prescription you exported from PIX4Dfields. You can then create an Operation using “annotations” in step 1.
