Based on the feedback of our Pix4Dfields users, the NDRE index seems to be the most effective indicator for turf health. It is used consistently to monitor golf courses and can reveal stress from heat and water issues before it’s fully apparent to the naked eye.
Here are some key, actionable ways superintendents are using the software:
Early Stress Detection: They identify and map turf stress caused by factors like excessive heat and water. The NDRE index values show a clear decline during stressful periods, allowing for proactive management.
Disease Management & Targeted Spraying: They pinpoint and map fungal diseases, such as “summer patch.” They then use the prescription tool to create targeted spray applications, focusing chemicals only where needed.
Monitoring Recovery and Efficacy: They track improvements in turf health after a change in weather or management intervention. For example, our users noted a clear improvement in the index values after a cold front allowed the course to dry out, confirming that even small changes in the index can represent significant real-world changes in turf health.
Building a Historical Baseline: The most powerful insights come from tracking changes over time. By flying the course regularly (e.g., weekly or bi-weekly) and exporting the index statistics for specific zones (like fairways or individual greens), a manager can build a historical log. This helps them understand what the “normal” index values are for their specific course throughout the season and to spot anomalies year-to-year.
