Hi there. Wondering if someone can help out. I’m trying to see why the 2D and the 3D area are reading the same (1578 M2)? See attached picture. Still a newbie Thanks again.

Thank you for your message and for sharing a screenshot.
The 2D and 3D values you are reading, refer to the violet polygon and not the actual volume.
If the base of your stockpile (where you drawn the polygon) is mostly flat, then the 2D and 3D areas will likely match.
You can try by drawing a polygon on a slope. In that case, the 3D area will be larger than the 2D area. The 2D area will be your 3D area projected on a 2D horizontal surface.
You can see this in the Demo Project: Romont - SODA 3D where the polygon is drawn on a slope and the difference between 2D and 3D area is important.

Sorry, just trying to get my head around this.But it seem strange that if the polygon was surrounding a stock pile, the sides and top of the stock pile are taken into account when calculating the surface area(3D). We would like to know the surface area of the triangulation created. (Not the foot print area)
This is important in this particular case, we are wanting to calculate the area of fabric needed to cover the entire stockpile. This would be much higher quantity in surface area, than a plan area or the foot print of the stock pile.
I trust Pix4D can do this.
Your thoughts? Hopefully I have explained it a bit better?

I understand your request, but this feature is not implemented in PIX4Dcloud and PIX4Dcloud advanced.
2D and 3D areas only refer to the polygon and not the surface area.

Unfortunately, no Pix4D Product can measure the surface of the terrain. You will need to use third-party software.

Thanks. So what you are saying is when we measure in pix4d or PIX4Dcloud (a area) it will give us that area measure but not the surface area size? Ie if there are some small rolling hills it won’t be able to pick up those surfaces of the hills as such?

Yes, you are correct.
You can measure the 3D area of a polygon and its 2D footprint, but you can’t measure the area of the terrain itself.
