Maximum Number of Splats per Model and Points settings

I’ve been using the new Gaussian Splat feature, and we really like the results, but I was looking to see if I could make the models look even more realistic, as I’ve seen online for other products. I found the setting in the Preferences for Maximum Number of Splats per model, and it’s set at the default of 2M.

But when I look at the last splat I created it has 68M.

I looked through the documentation and can’t find an explanation for what that setting does. Similarly, the point cloud setting is an 8M, but the cloud has 1.8B.

Can someone explain what these settings actually do, and if there is a way to improve the output without significantly increasing processing time? It looks great zoomed out, but as I zoom in, it gets a little messy looking. As it is, it took 25 hours just to create that splat.

Hi scavendish,

Our apologies if the documentation lacks some info. The rendering options in the Preferences settings simply reduce the number of points or Gaussians (for Gaussian splats) in the 3D viewer. It does not impact the quality of the outputs. For lower-end GPUs that might lack in processing power, reducing the number can make the display much smoother. Otherwise, you might experience a lag or glitchy controls while interacting with the 3D models.

Thanks for the clarification. Makes sense.
