DJI Mavic Pro Autofocus Issue

Hello all.

Please, are there advancements in correcting the Mavic Pro’s auto focus issue with an updated DJI SDK for controlling better the sensor?

Did last iOS 3.3.0 (07-31-2018) solve or take into account the above issue?

The best.

@all Pix4D Supporter

all have still the same problems with autofocus of Mavic Pro. The new Mavic 2 is now available and you did`nt not found a solution to solve the problems for the old Mavic Pro. So please give us any news about your efforts how to fix the old problems.

Hey all. I can tell that there are a lot of you who would like to see this issue resolved. I have checked in with our Capture dev team and will relay any relevant updates. In the meantime, I want to pass on a workaround that some users have reported working.

  • Connect to the Mavic through the Pix4D app.
  • Fly to the same altitude which the mission is set to and then manually point the camera down and click the C1 button to focus
  • Start the mission while the Mavic is already in the air. This focusing trick only works before the mission is started

As this is not the intended workflow this falls under the use at your own risk category of advice. I know this is not optimal and will get as soon as I have more info.

Hey Holden,

Thanks for the answer. But it’s a joke right?

Your workaround has been suggested a several times before and it doesn’t work. Plain and simple as that! Pix4D hasn’t put any effort in this issue since it has been raised and your message just illustrates it perfectly.

Thanks Holden, I am off to UgCS:

https://www.ugcs.com/

It’s a far superior solution for mission planning

Thanks,

Kai

Hey Kai. Sorry to not have something more concrete. If others have found an alternate workaround that works for them please feel free to share here. Also, I will get back with an update once I have heard from the Capture team.

@Holden nice to hear somthing is alive at Pix4D. The autofocus is not the only problem in the pix4D capture app.
I was at a Pix4D workshop in Berlin in April this year. There it was pointed out that it is important to adjust the altitude over ground to the terrain to ensure the same image scale / ground resolution everywhere. See the screenshot. I am surprised that in Pix4DCapture it is not possible to import terrain and to take into account the flight planning to adjust the height above ground. We operate surveying and do not want to create any agricultural land index maps.
We need accuracy and functionality. Unfortunately Pix4D Capture does not offer that at the moment.

Hi all. So, unfortunately, the word is that the Mavic blur issue is not being worked on at the moment. We are continuing to add new features and will keep improving the app but the reality of app development is that there needs to be an efficient allocation of resources and our developers are focused on adding new features and incorporating support for new drones like the Anafi and DJI P4P V2.

I think the best thing for this post is for everyone to share feedback about the different workarounds that have been proposed so that we can find a workflow that works to address this issue. I know that’s not optimal for some but I think we can get this issue figured out without too much trouble. If you have tried the workflow I proposed previously and it has not worked then please report what happened and maybe we can improve. Otherwise, if you have found something else that works for you we can explore that. Thanks, everyone for your patience.

@Christian This feature is a very popular request. You should show your support in the correct support post.

@Holden Thanks for the link to correct the post support. The last comment there is from 12/2017, that’s a good sign to show everyone here that nothing is happening the last 8 months. It is also very important to support all new drones first, so that they will all have the same problems as us.

If the focus does not work and you’re not dedicating any resources to fix it, you should remove Mavic Pro from your supported hardware list

Is there any update about MAVIC Pro autofocus issue? It is really impossible to perform any decent aerial mapping mission with P4D and this device.

Hi,

i’ve got the same problems with Mavic Pro’s mentioned in this forum. Are there any new updates yet?

My first encounter was on a forestry job with a brand new MP in mid May. All images were out of focus, which I found out in the office. Next day I drove to the same spot with my private Mavic. Pictures were all good. In order to solve this problem I made test with 3 Mavics and 3 different smartphones (android and ios) to see if the camera is broken or if problem based on Pix4Dcapture. Result:

  • sharp images with all drones in DJI GO
  • blurry or out of focus images from 2 of 3 Mavics in Pix4Dcapture
  • focus can varies in one flight.

The best but not sufficient work around was to plan the mission in Pix4Dcapture and save it. Close the app, fly to the altitude you want and open DJI GO. The drone will automatically focus when the App is opened. Close DJI Go and open Pix4Dcapture. The pictures should be sharp. I’ve still got some different image qualities from all 3 drones. (Same area, same flightlines, same work around). Some flights might be sharp because the focus is fortuitously right.

My suggestions to fix the problem are flowing:

  • Tap screen to focus
  • Focus with C1 or C2 button on the RC. Doesn’t work if you set it up in DJI GO and use it in Pix4Dcapture.
  • Set the focus to infinity if the flight height is more than 50m.

We recommend Pix4Dcapture to our customers and were always glad with it. Encounter more and more blurry images will sooner or later change our opinion on Pix4Dcapture. Please fix the porblem asap.

Hi team and all,

My first mission had outputted blurry images and it seems it is now really a new issue. Any chance this will be fixed someday ? I am gonna try the workaround, but that impaires quite a lot the user experience on this.

Thanks

Jérôme

Hello,

We are aware of some issues with the image focus when flying the DJI Mavic Pro. These issues seem to happen randomly as no clear pattern was identified so far. At the moment we recommend to try the procedure below. Developers are looking to find a solution so that it can be fixed in a future release.

Recommendations :

  1. Setup the focusing action to C1/C2 of the remote controller (prior to the flight, in DJI GO).
  2. Fly the drone to the first waypoint and press C1/C2 to focus using DJI GO.
  3. Quit DJI GO app and Start the mission in Pix4Dcapture.

2 posts were merged into an existing topic: Can’t connect to DJI Mavic Pro

Hi,

Still not working. Almost 2 years and no solutions (the one you recommand doesnt work because i cant connect to pix4d when the drone is in flight). Today i’ve lost a day of work. Thanks pix4d.

Would you try to solve this problem for real in a short time?

Lucky for us, other companies a now ready, and I think we will switch to other solutions than yours. However, I’ll keep doing bad reviews of your company. Total disrespect for your customers.

Hello,

Sorry to hear that. However, I would still suggest you go through all the basic checks and troubleshooting steps as it will solve most of the issues that can be encountered if properly followed.

If you are referring to the focus issue then, we are aware of some issues with the image focus when flying the DJI Mavic Pro. These issues seem to happen randomly as no clear pattern was identified so far. There are a lot of users who are able to fly the drone without any issue. At the moment, we recommend to try the procedure below.

Please keep in mind that Pix4Dmapper can process images taken from virtually any application as long as they are of good quality and overlap.

Regards,

Yes the issue is with autofocus. And it happen on 80% of our files.

Your recommandation doesnt work because im not able te reconnect the drone with pix4dcapture while he is flying.

Please fix this bug, this is not serious…

Hello,

The drone should always be connected to the app while flying. However, we don’t suggest you do try the above recommendation during the flight. You have to try the above procedure with the DJI GO app before you plan a mission.

Regards,

Hi,

So your recommandation above are not clear… you should ad a point 2b “land and start pix4d”, wich I do and dont solve the problem.

We found alternative in some of your concurrent. We’ll stop using pix4d.

Please keep in mind that Pix4Dmapper can process images taken from virtually any application as long as they are of good quality and overlap. If your expectation are not meet by Pix4Dcapture app due to its limitation, you can use any image acquisition app to capture the image data.
